1. Introduction to Turpentine & Its Derivatives

Turpentine is a natural terpene essential oil steam-distilled from pine oleoresin of Pinus massoniana and other pine species, serving as a fundamental raw material in the forest chemical industry. China ranks first globally in turpentine output, with major production areas covering Guangxi, Guangdong, Yunnan, Fujian and Jiangxi.

Classified by raw materials and production processes, turpentine is divided into gum turpentine, wood turpentine and sulfate turpentine. Among them, gum turpentine is the mainstream product thanks to its high purity and pure aroma.

Its main components include α-pinene and β-pinene, together with dipentene, camphene, 3-carene, terpinene and other ingredients. Featuring high volatility, good lipophilicity and strong chemical activity, turpentine is widely used as industrial solvent, topical medicine, mineral flotation agent and agricultural insect repellent additive.

Through deep processing technologies such as rectification, isomerization, hydration, oxidation, esterification, polymerization and cracking, turpentine can be converted into hundreds of high-value derivatives. These products are extensively applied in flavors & fragrances, pharmaceuticals & disinfection products, polymer resins, fine chemical intermediates, food, daily chemicals and agriculture.
