Chinese Star Anise Oil

Chinese Star Anise Oil is a natural essential oil obtained by steam distillation from the fruits and branches and leaves of Illicium verum. As a characteristic spice product of China, it accounts for more than 85% of the global total output.

1. Origin & Industry Status

It is mainly produced in Guangxi (over 80% of China’s total production), with core planting areas including Debao, Baise, Shangsi and Longzhou. Supplementary producing regions cover Yunnan, Guangdong, Guizhou and Fujian. China is the world’s leading supplier and exports large quantities of the product all year round.

2. Physical Properties

  • Appearance: Colorless to pale yellow oily liquid, easy to solidify at low temperature.
  • Aroma: Rich and sweet typical star anise fragrance with a mild sweet note.
  • Main components: Anethole (80–90%), alongside anisaldehyde, limonene, linalool, pinene and other ingredients.

3. Extraction Process

Raw materials include dried fruits (oil yield: 8–12%), fresh fruits (oil yield: 2–3%) as well as branches and leaves (oil yield: 0.7–0.9%). The process fully retains the natural aroma and active ingredients.
